The Violet Scholarship was established in honor of an extraordinary woman who refused to let barriers define her future. Now, we carry her spirit forward — one student at a time.

Violet knew what it meant to fight for an education. In a time when access to learning was far from guaranteed for girls and women, she persevered — and in doing so, she changed the trajectory not just of her own life, but of everyone she touched.
The Violet Scholarship, established under the Zephlin Albertha Smith Legacy Foundation, exists to honor that perseverance. It exists to say: your desire to learn is worth investing in. Your community needs what you're becoming.
This is not just a financial award. It is a declaration that your educational journey matters — and that you don't have to walk it alone.

For those who are called to teach, lead classrooms, shape curriculum, or advocate for educational equity. We believe the next generation of teachers, administrators, and educational advocates deserves support from day one.

For those who are called to heal. Whether you're pursuing nursing, medicine, public health, mental health, or healthcare administration — your work will save lives and restore dignity in communities that need it most.

For those who understand that food is power — and that sustainable agriculture is one of the most urgent missions of our time. We support students who are building a future where communities are fed, soil is honored, and farmers are valued.

For those who are building something. Whether you're launching a business that serves your community, creating economic opportunity where it doesn't exist, or developing solutions to problems others have overlooked — we want to invest in your vision.
The Violet Scholarship is open to students who carry Violet's spirit — a commitment to learning, a desire to give back, and the resilience to keep going despite obstacles.
You may be eligible if you:
We welcome applicants at all stages of their educational journey. Whether you're in middle school, finishing high school, entering college for the first time, or returning to school after a gap — there is a place for you here.
Applications open annually. Each step of the process is designed to be straightforward and respectful of your time.
Step 1: Complete the Scholarship Application Form
The application, filling out all required fields and select your scholarship track.
Step 2: Submit Your Personal Statement (Required for high school students and above — up to 500 words)
Tell us your story. Share your educational aspirations, the challenges you've faced in your pursuit of learning, and how you plan to give back to your community. We're not looking for perfection — we're looking for honesty and heart.
Step 3: Provide Two Letters of Recommendation
Your letters should come from teachers, mentors, school counselors, or community leaders who know your commitment to education and your character. They should speak to who you are — not just what you've achieved.
Step 4: Submit Your Most Recent Academic Transcript
A copy of your most recent academic record is required. We review transcripts in context — understanding that many of our applicants have faced circumstances that affected their academic performance.

Every application is reviewed by a selection committee dedicated to honoring the true spirit of Violet's legacy. We look for more than grades.

Scholarship amounts are determined annually based on available funding. Recipients will be notified directly.
As a Violet Scholarship recipient, you are encouraged to give back through community service that supports education and lifelong learning. Whether that looks like:
Your growth is connected to the growth of those around you. That's Violet's legacy — and now it's yours to carry forward.
Scholarship recipients are announced annually at a dedicated ceremony honoring Violet's life and legacy. This celebration is more than an award ceremony — it is a gathering of students, mentors, educators, and community members who believe that education is one of the most powerful tools we have.
We invite all recipients, their families, and supporters to join us in honoring both the legacy of Violet and the bright futures of those who carry her spirit forward.
Details about the annual ceremony will be shared with applicants and recipients via email.
